Proper name [Swahili]

Audio: Sw-ke-Yesu.flac
Etymology: Christian missionaries of the 19th century used the Quranic form Isa, but the usage switched to Yesu between ca. 1890 and 1910 in order to stress the fundamental Christological differences between Christianity and Islam. The form appears to be a direct loan from Latin Iēsūs. It is possible that the Christian Arabic form يَسُوع (yasūʕ), of which some European missionaries must have been aware, also played a role, but there seems to be no hard evidence of this.
